History

The history of IRKUT Corporation begins in the thirties of the past century, when “Plant #125”, currently Irkutsk Aviation Plant, which is the major manufacturing facility of IRKUT Corporation, was founded on the banks of the Angara River in the outskirts of Irkutsk in spring of 1932.

Launched with high rate, the construction of the site was completed in two years. As a result, on August 24, 1934, the “Plant #125” was put into operation and on September 8, 1934, was officially included in the register of existing enterprises of the Soviet heavy industry.

In 1941, as a result of a merger with the evacuated Moscow aircraft factory the Irkutsk Aviation Plant was renamed into “Plant #39”. The Plant has made a significant contribution to the victory in the Great Patriotic War delivering thousands of combat aircraft to Soviet Air Forces, among which were the legendary Pe-2 diving bombers, Pe-3 long-range fighters, IL-4 and Er-2 long-range bombers.

After the War the Irkutsk Aviation Plant became one of the leading enterprises of the Soviet aircraft industry, which made a worthy contribution to strengthening of the USSR and its allies’ defense capability. The An-12 military transport aircraft, different modifications of Yak-28 aircraft, MiG-23UB training fighters and MiG-27M fighter-bombers were produced at the Irkutsk Plant.

In 1983-1986 the Irkutsk Aviation Plant was involved in organization of licensed production of MiG-27 fighter-bombers in India.

In 1986, the Plant started to produce Su-27UB fourth-generation fighter that served as the basis for the development of Su-30 fighter-interceptor and Su-30MKI multipurpose fighter.

In April 1989 the Irkutsk Aircraft Production Association was formed on the basis of Irkutsk Plant, that was later converted in to an open joint stock company and registered as JSC “Irkutsk Aviation Production Association” (IAPA) in October 1992.

At the end of 1980-s new automated design and manufacturing technologies were introduced at IAPA that provided significant reduction of starting time of new products in series production.

Alexey I. Fedorov headed IAPA in 1997. Same year IAPO became the first of the enterprise of the Russian aircraft industry to receive a Certificate of Quality Production Conformity to International Standard ISO 9002.

On December 19, 2002, at an extraordinary shareholder meeting IAPA was renamed to JSC “Scientific and Production Corporation “IRKUT”. And in this case it was not about proclamation of purposes, but statement of facts. Actually vertically-integrated structure has already been created and operational. Besides the Irkutsk Aviation Plant itself a number of other enterprises such as JSC “Beriev Aircraft Company”, CJSC “BETA AIR”, Design Bureau “Russian Avionics”, JSC “ITELA” and some other enterprises belonged to IAPA’s structure.

On the eve of its 70-anniversary IRKUT Corporation (JSC) has completed an important stage in developing its corporate structure, having bought a 75.46% stake in the JSC “Yakovlev Design Bureau”.

The IRKUT Corporation shareholders have transferred their 38.2% stake of IRKUT Corporation to UAC’s charter capital in return receiving 9.9% of UAC’s shares.

In more than 70 years since the beginning of operations in 1934 the Irkutsk Plant produced more than twenty aircraft types of practically all aircraft design bureaus of the USSR and Russia. Herewith each new type of aircraft was characterized by design and technological solutions unique for their time. The aircraft produced at Irkutsk Aviation Plant were exported to thirty seven countries.

Currently, IRKUT Corporation order backlog is valued at more than $5.1 billion.
