History

Taganrog Aviation Scientific-Technical Complex named after G.M. Beriev was founded on October 1, 1934. By that date it was necessary to organize the Central Design Bureau of Seaplane Manufacturing at the facilities of Aircraft Plant #31 in Taganrog. Georgiy M. Beriev became the Chief Designer of the Bureau. At that time, the Design Bureau was mainly engaged in seaplane construction.

In 1946, the Central Design Bureau of Seaplane Manufacturing was reformed into the State Union Experimental Plant #49 of Sea Aircraft. In 1989 the enterprise has been renamed into Taganrog Aviation Scientific-Technical Complex named after G.M. Beriev, and in 1994 reformed into joint stock company “Taganrog Aviation Scientific-Technical Complex n/a G.M. Beriev” (hereinafter – Beriev Aircraft Company).

Throughout the 70 years of its history, Beriev Aircraft Company has demonstrated exceptional creativity and has contributed immensely to the development of Russian science and technology, first and foremost in the field of hydroplanes and amphibious aircraft construction.

MBR-2 short-range reconnaissance aircraft as well as KOR-1 (Be-2) and KOR-2 (Be-4) ship-borne hydroplanes were designed in prewar years and were used successfully by the Soviet Navy during the Great Patriotic War.

In 1940-1960-ies, a number of worldwide-known hydroplanes such as Be-6 flying boat, Be-10 jet seaplane and Be-12 amphibious aircraft, the largest at that time, were designed for sea frontier patrolling. For a long period these aircraft were operational, having high performance and seaworthiness characteristics verified by dozens of world records established. The development of these aircraft secured the world priority of Russia in the domain of hydroplanes manufacturing.

In 1968 Be-30 (Be-32) short-haul aircraft was designed. Due to political reasons, this aircraft never became mass-produced. 25 years later, it was reconstructed in the form of the Be-32Ê and exhibited at the Paris airshow where it attracted great attention on part of aviation specialists.

In the same year of 1968, G.M. Beriev had to retire from his post for health reasons, and Alexey K. Konstantinov headed the Design Bureau.

In 1970-1980-ies, Beriev Aircraft Company considerably expanded its scope of activities. Those years were remarkable for the development of strategic weapon systems such as A-50 airborne long-range early warning and guidance system and Tu-142MR super-long-range communications system based on existing carrier aircraft. Beriev Aircraft Company also participated in designing of the “Buran” space shuttle.

The accumulated experience in the field of science and engineering made it possible for Beriev Aircraft Company to expand its work to design a new generation of amphibians characterized by unique combination of high performance and seaworthiness characteristics.

In 1986 A-40 amphibious aircraft, the largest in the world, made its maiden flight. Its sophistication was confirmed by 148 world records. The A-42PE amphibian for patrol and search-rescue operations was designed on the basis of the A-40 amphibious aircraft.

Appointment of Gennadiy S. Panatov as Chief Designer and Executive Manager in 1990, and as General Designer and CEO in 1992, opened a new chapter in the history of Beriev Aircraft Company. The Company started to develop multipurpose civil amphibians destined to win recognition from customers and praise from experts. From 2002, Beriev Aircraft Company is headed by Valentin V. Boev. During those years, the Company renewed contracts with RF Ministry of Defense as well as with foreign customers. Viktor A. Kobzev, the present General Director and General Designer Beriev Aircraft Company holds his post since 2003.

Along with being a defense contractor, Beriev Aircraft Company is engaged in civil projects. Development of the Be-200ES multipurpose amphibian is complete. Four aircraft in the version of Be-200ES are in service with the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations (EMERCOM of Russia).

In 2001, Aircraft Type Certificate was for the Be-200 and Be-103 amphibious aircraft. Work on certification of these aircraft abroad is under way.

In 2004-2005, the Be-200ES aircraft demonstrated successful operation in Italy under an agreement between Beriev Aircraft Company and SOREM company, the official fire-protection aircraft operator authorized by the Civil Defense Department (Protezione Civile) of Italy.

In 2006, a contract on leasing Be-200ES amphibious aircraft was signed between Beriev Aircraft Company and the National Fire Service and Civil Defense of Portugal. In accordance with the contract, Be-200ES amphibian put out forest fires in the territory of continental Portugal.

Be-103 light amphibious aircraft is being produced in series at the facilities of Komsomolsk-on-Amur Aircraft Production Association n/a Yu. Gagarin. This amphibian can carrying up to five passengers, and is exported to the USA. The Be-103 amphibian is certified according to requirements of Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) of the USA, and has Type Certificates issued by Airworthiness Authorities of Brazil and China.

Today, the priority is given to activities connected with designing Bå-200 modifications and with development of new hydroplanes. In particular, Beriev Aircraft Company is actively conducting the certification of the aircraft according to European standards aimed to increase the aircraft’s competitiveness on international markets.

Since its foundation, Beriev Aircraft Company specialists have designed 35 types of aircraft for various purposes and 16 of these aircraft have been in serial production. In the course of research and development work, Beriev Aircraft Company specialists have received more than 900 certificates of authorship and patents for the designed aircraft and their structural components. 250 world aviation records were made by pilots flying Beriev Aircraft Company seaplanes and amphibians constructed at different times. The records are registered and acknowledged by the International Aviation Federation (FAI).

In November 1989 Beriev Aircraft Company became the only defense industry enterprise to win the Prize for Quality awarded by the Government of Russia.

In September 2000, Beriev Aircraft Company was honored with a title “The Leader of Regional Economy” in “High Aviation Technologies and Production” category.

In November 2000, Beriev Aircraft Company received a Gold medal "Guarantee of Quality and Security” for active work on Be-200 aircraft adaptation to Russian Federal Border Service forces.

But the most important result of all these years of work is, undoubtedly, the creation of a unique Russian aircraft design school which now holds a key position in the field of development of hydroplanes and amphibian aircraft.

Beriev Aircraft Company actively participates in all major international exhibitions, such as the International Aerospace Salon "Le Bourget" (France, Paris), Farnborough (Great Britain), ILA (Berlin, Germany), Asian Aerospace (Singapore), MAKS (Russia, Zhukovskiy). Furthermore, Beriev Aircraft Company is the founder and organizer of GIDROAVIASALON, the world's only International Exhibition and Conference on Hydroaviation (Russia, Gelendzhik). The Government of the Russian Federation supports the event and six exhibitions and scientific conferences were held in 1996-2006.
