The Komsomolsk-on-Amur Aircraft Production Association named after Y.A. Gagarin is Russia’s largest aircraft-manufacturing company. Built in 1934, the aircraft plant has now evolved in a major enterprice in the Far Eastern region of Russia, which has manufactured hundreds of civil aircraft and thousands of various-role military aircraft from the first recon aircraft to modern Su- series fighters and light amphibian aeroplanes.

The Komsomolsk-on-Amur aviation plant rolled out its first production aircraft – the multipurpose reconnaissance bomber ANT-7 (R-6) in May 1936. It was later followed by bomber IL-4, torpedo bomber IL-4T and the transport aircraft Li-2.

The new chapter of the plant’s history began in 1949, when the first series jet fighter MiG-15 and then MiG-17 production began.

The fruitful and long-term cooperation between KnAAPO and Sukhoi Design Bureau began in 1958 from the point when the first series supersonic tactical fighters Su-7 left the plant’s assembly jigs. For more than twenty years the plant has been producing Su-7 fighters and its modifications.

Since 1964 KnAAPO started to export Sukhoi military aircraft. During this period, about two thousand Su-7, Su-20 and Su-22 aircraft of different versions have been delivered to 19 countries around the world.

Since mid-1980's Su-27 fourth-generation fighter became KnAAPO’s primary product. That fighter formed the basis of military front aviation of Russia. Machines of this type currently dominate Russian aircraft exports.

Within a short period of time, in co-operation with Sukhoi Design Bureau, KnAAPO has developed and begun production of new Sukhoi aircraft based on the Su-27 platform. Among them: Su-27SC, Su-33, Su-30MC and others. The Plant has achieved short lead times for Sukhoi family aircraft production set up. For instance, production of the Su-30MC fighter from design to first flight has been implemented within the record short time – in 9 months. This became possible due to wide usage of electronic documentation in entire spectrum of production processes.

In 1996 according to the Presidential Decree KnAAPO became part of JSC “Aviation Holding Company “Sukhoi”.

KnAAPO is one of a few Russian enterprises that independently carry out three-dimensional computer coordination of assemble with the accuracy of several microns. The production of Su-30MC fighter for the first time in the practice of series plant is realized on the basis of the formalized electronic messages and is executed without the production of physical mold lofts and mock-ups of the article’s surface.

A wide range of CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machine tools for milling, turning and electroerosion machining, plasma laser cutting, equipped with PC and the use of a measuring machine “Morah” allows KnAAPO to reach a new level of output of the means of technological equipment on the non-pattern methodology. Important significance is given to introduction of CALS-technologies into the production process. The first step on the way to this process is electronic serial escorts designed layouts.

In order to increase the attractiveness of its products the Enterprise has expanded the work for the creation of interactive operational-technical management (IETR) on the basis of international standards (MIL-M-87268).

Within the framework of conversion programs and besides military aviation equipment KnAAPO participates in“Beriev-103” (Be-103) light amphibian aircraft and Su-80 multipurpose aircraft for the local and regional air lines production programs.

In 1999 and 2001 the Russian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs and the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of RF have granted KnAAPO the title “best Russian enterprise”.

In November 2000 the Fund for Social Development “Third Millenium” has awarded KnAAPO the “Russian national Olympus” as to an enterprise that made a great contribution to the strengthening of Russia’s economic power.

In April 2001 in Geneva KnAAPO was awarded the XXII International Prize “For the Technology and the Quality”, Trade Leaders Club Award.

In August, 2001 during the international airshow MAKS-2001 KnAAPO received the “Gold Idea” national award.
