History

AVIASTAR-SP aircraft manufacturing plant is the youngest enterprise among its Russian analogues.
On April 16, 1975, the Central Committee of Communist party and Council of Ministers of the USSR signed the decree founding a wide-body aircraft manufacturing enterprise in Ulyanovsk. On April 25, 1975, the Ministry of Aviation Industry of the USSR issued an order to build Ulyanovsk Aviation Industrial Complex consisting of three plants: aircraft construction, aggregate and instrument-making. Also, in 1975, following Decree # 1784-đń of the Board of Ministers of the USSR dated 05.08.1975, the Ministry of Aviation Industry issued Order # 350 “For Construction of Aviation Industrial Complex in Ulyanovsk” dated 01.09.1975.

On June 10, 1976, after land surveying ground was broken to construct the main factory building of a future gigantic aircraft manufacturing plant. That date is considered the birthday of Ulyanovsk Aviation Industrial Complex (UAIC) n/a D.F. Ustinov (presentday – CJSC “Aviastar-SP”).

A.P. Systsov, an experienced a/c manufacturer, was appointed UAIC’s first General Director. Later he became the Minister for Aviation Industry of the USSR.

Construction of a future gigantic aircraft manufacturing plant deployed on the left bank of the Volga River practically and virtually had no equal in its magnitude as well as industrial and architectural decisions. Work was conducted in many global directions. Both the Plant and huge residential area were built simultaneously. The construction of the enterprise had the All-Union Komsomol building-site status. UAIC was recognized as the architectural and industrial model of that time.

Continuous recruitment was organized all over the country as well as staff education and skill improvement at related enterprises. Existing higher and post-secondary education training institutions of Ulyanovsk as well as a new training center, an aviation technical school, a lyceum and a high school that were built in the New City all conducted intensive training of personnel for the aircraft construction complex.

The Plant’s first shop – "instrumental" began working in a temporary hangar and in March 1980, the tools installation and setup has started. In March 1981, the workshops of technical tackle production were put into operation. In April 1981, workshops of assembly production were added. By the end of 1981, two large accessory assembling production workshops began operations. All that allowed to put the first fuselage of An-124 military transport aircraft in holding frames in November 1981.

On October 30, 1985 the first test and evaluation flight (its duration – nearly two hours) was performed. The An-124 “Ruslan” airliner made a sensation at many prestigious international air shows. Many of An-124’ parameters are not yet surpassed by any other aircraft. Load capacity of this unique aircraft reaches 150 tons and exceeds that of all known transport planes. At present, JSC “Aviastar-SP” produces An-124-100 aircraft in the An-124-100M variant that complies with chapter 4 ICAO and other new technical requirements. All in all thirty four An-124 aircraft were produced at Ulyanovsk’s Plant and two aircraft of this model are being currently manufactured.

On June 6, 1991, a maiden flight of the first serial civil An-124-100 “Ruslan” aircraft was performed. And on October 1993, Aviation Register of Interstate Aviation Committee issued the “Production Approval Certificate” to “Aviastar-SP” for manufacture of An-124 “Ruslan” aircraft.

In 1992 the Ulyanovsk Aviation Industrial Complex named after D.F. Ustinov was reorganized into CJSC “Aviastar-SP”

Development and production of the Tu-204 medium-haul passenger aircraft began in 1989. Modern aerodynamics, low cost and quiet engines made Tu-204 competitive on domestic and foreign aircraft markets. The Tu-204 aircraft concept and its modifications (Tu-204-100, Tu-204-120, Tu-204C, Tu-204-120C, Tu-204-300) contains a wide range of options and layouts of cabin crew, avionics, passenger cabins and cargo holds satisfying various market demands.

17.08.1990 – The first flight of Tu-204 passenger aircraft manufactured by UAIC. That date marked the emergence of a family of passenger and cargo aircraft.

12.02.1993 – The first Tu-204 freighter with PS-90A engines was manufactured.

11.06.1993 – For the first time, Aviastar-manufactured Tu-204 passenger aircraft with Rolls-Royce engines was exhibited at the International Airshow in Le Bourget (France).

29.05.1995 – Aviation Register of Interstate Aviation Committee issued the “Production Approval Certificate” to “Aviastar-SP” for manufacture of the passenger and cargo aircraft of Tu-204 family.
16.08.1995 – The first Tu-204-100 middle-range passenger aircraft with PS-90A engines was manufactured.

10.1998 – The first Tu-204-100 passenger aircraft and the first cargo aircraft Tu-204-120C with Rolls-Royce engines were manufactured under long-term international contract with the Egyptian company “Kato Aromatic”.

By 2000, all passenger and cargo modifications of the Tu-204 aircraft family – Tu-204-100, Tu-204C, Tu-204-120, Tu-204-120C – have been certified by the Aviation Register of Interstate Aviation Committee of the Russian Federation.

The construction of a Tu-204-300 prototype began in late 2003. After being displayed at the MAKS-2003 this aircraft started certification tests.

Tu-204-300, s/n 64026, successfully performed its first maiden non-stop flight to Vladivostok in 2004. Same year a number of An-124-100 aircraft was delivered to “Volga-Dnepr” and “Polyot” airlines.

In 2005 the Tu-204-300 certification tests were complete and the aircraft was presented at MAKS-2005 airshow. Same year four Tu-204-300 aircraft were delivered to “Vladivostok Avia” airline.

Today a number of Tu-204 aircraft are in operation in such airlines as Caucasian Mineral Waters, Novosibirsk, Krasnoyarsk, Vladivostok, Moscow, Cairo and Liege. Tu-204 flights connect Russian cities with capitals of Western Europe as well as popular Spanish, Turkish and Egyptian resorts. Tu-204C aircraft are in operation on routes in Western Europe: Belgium, Iceland, Sweden, Norway, Italy, France, Denmark. Tu-204C aircraft are transporting goods between China, Russia and Western Europe working practically on all continents. An-124 and Tu-204 aircraft proved themselves well on international and domestic routes of “Trans-European airlines”, “KavMinVody Avia”, “Vnukovo airlines”, “Siberia”, “Volga-Dnepr”, “Polyot”, “Dalavia”, “Air Cairo” (Egypt), and other airlines.

Participation of An-124 “Ruslan” and Tu-204 aircraft made in Ulyanovsk at international air shows in Le Bourget (France), Vancouver (Canada), Farnborough (England), Sydney (Australia), Dubai (United Arab Emirates), Singapore, USA, Zhuhai (China) and Moscow repeatedly confirm the high professional level of JSC "Aviastar-SP” staff.

The potential and the benefits of Ulyanovskmade airliners have not been fully discovered. The specialists of “Aviastar-SP” (CJSC) together with JSC “Tupolev” are developing a number of new versions of Tu-204 aircraft family designs. A vivid illustration – the Tu-204-300 aircraft, that received a “start to life” in March 2004 and has been recognized by leading airlines in Russia and the world. Four Tu-204-300 airliners that have been delivered to "Vladivostok Avia" airline in 2005, connected Seoul, St. Petersburg, Beijing and Moscow by comfortable air bridge for the first time.
