History
The history of the Kazan Aviation Production Association n.a. S.P.Gorbunov (KAPO) began in 1927, when the USSR Council on Labor and Defense issues an order to create an aviation manufacturing plant in Moscow. Before the war the plant produced ANT-3 and ANT-40 aircraft designed by Tupolev and Pe-2 bombers designed by Petlyakov. These aircraft have set a number of record flights and world records.
In early 30’s an aviation plant was set up in Kazan, and in 1941 its territory hosted the Moscow plant n.a. S.P.Gorbunov that was evacuated from Moscow. From December 1941 these two plants were merged into a single entity named as Kazan aviation plant #22 n.a. S.P.Gorbunov.
During the war the plant produced 10 to 12 Pe-2 bombers per day. In total, more than 10 thousand aircraft of the type were produced during the war. Pe-8 long-range bomber, which was also produced at the plant, was a big help in defeating the enemy
During the post-war years the plant mastered production of the Tu-4 strategic bomber and the Tu-16 long-range bomber. In 1960’s the plant was first in the world to produce jet aircraft: Tu-104 – that has set 26 world records and comfortable intercontinental Il-62 and Il-62M liners, that for more than 30 years were the icon of the civil aviation.
Last decades were devoted to mastering the production of unique supersonic bombers – Tu-22M3 and the pride of Russian strategic aviation – Tu-160.
In total during more than 80 years of its existence KAPO produced more than 20 thousand aircraft of 30 types and modifications.
During the 1990s KAPO started to produce civil aircraft of a new generation – Tu-214. Currently, passenger aircraft produced by the plant fly on routes from Khabarovsk to Moscow, to Japan and Korea. Four aircraft have been built for RF Government customers. Transaero, one of the leading Russian airlines, operates three Tu-214 aircraft with pending orders for two and options for five more.
In April 2008 KAPO has been transformed from a unitary state enterprise into a joint-stock company and, consequently, became a UAC’s 100%-owned subsidiary in November 2009.
